Lawrence gets to try on a finely tuned Russian accent, as well as many gorgeous costume, makeup, and hairstyle changes, but although she tries her best, the character never really comes to life. Jennifer Lawrence re-teams with her Hunger Games director for this more grown-up attempt at a complex, sexy thriller, but the result is airless, mopey, and dull. And please review the meaning of sexism before applying to to one of the most female empowering stories I have seen in a long time. If it's not for you, spare us your horrified reviews after watching a film you were too fragile to handle maturely. Make use of them and use judgment about what you can handle. Reviews and ratings are available for potential audiences to know what they are getting into. I am often frankly amused by the shocked reactions to violence and sex depicted in film. In closing, I quote Jennifer Lawrence who said of the film "If you don't like boobs you should not go see Red Sparrow." While I can't personally imagine anyone who doesn't appreciate a beautiful woman, she makes a good point. Dominika is the epitome of a strong female lead and the feminist criticism of the sex and nudity is invalidated by Jennifer Lawrence, a feminist herself, stating clearly that she found the role personally empowering. I further disagree with the feminist response to this film, and to the claims of sexism. Many have said the film is too slow, but in reality, a binge diet of Michael Bay style constant action has destroyed viewers ability to enjoy the slow build up of tension, abandoning it for speedy gratification. The complaints from audiences and critics I consider to be unfounded. The actors truly has an excellent chemistry in portraying the relationship. It was good to see Dominika loved by a man who did not abuse her and whose caring was genuine, and to see her as a character made better by that influence. Nate Nash is a good man and a dedicated agent and his love for Dominika is admirable and refreshing, considering all the sexual violence going around. Not one who has a skilled stunt double, but one who has great reserves of internal strength and ingenuity to survive once forced in to abhorrent circumstances. While those films are stylized action silliness, with a 100lb woman beating up 200lb men and performing ridiculous stunts, Red Sparrow shows what a truly strong woman is. The comparisons made between this film and other female led spy films such as Atomic Blond, are disingenuous and inaccurate. Dominika is a strong and intelligent woman and a good, dare I say "feminist", role model for women when it comes to many admirably qualities including intelligence, perseverance and stamina. However I do not think this film gets enough credit for positive representations. Simply put, this film is exclusively for an adult audience. The torture scenes are also quite disturbing. The violence, especially sexual violence is harrowing and pervasive and there is copious nudity and adult content to be had. That said I further recommend that you know, as Dominika did not, what you are getting into. I thoroughly enjoyed this film and recommended it, as well as the book to anyone seeking a realistic espionage story. Acting performances from Jennifer Lawrence and Joel Edgerton are Academy Award worthy. The story is brilliant, fast paced and adrenaline charged. Based on real people and assignments from Matthew's career, this is one of the most accurate and honest spy stories available. The two young intelligence officers, trained in their respective spy schools, collide in a charged atmosphere of tradecraft, deception and, inevitably, a forbidden spiral of carnal attraction that threatens their careers and the security of America’s valuable mole in Moscow.įor fans of John le Carré and Ian Fleming and featuring “high-level espionage, pulse-pounding danger, sex, double agents, and double crosses” (Nelson DeMille), Red Sparrow is a timely and electrifying thriller that is impossible to put down.Based on the novel by CIA veteran Jason Matthews, Red Sparrow is among the best espionage/thriller films I have ever seen. She’s been assigned to Nathaniel Nash, a CIA officer who handles the organization’s most sensitive penetration of Russian intelligence. In contemporary Russia, state intelligence officer Dominika Egorova has been drafted to become a “Sparrow”-a spy trained in the art of seduction to elicit information from their marks.
